Your battery’s most important function is to start your engine. Once you’ve turned the key, the electrical charge from the battery should crank your engine. You should then be rewarded with the powerful sound of your Jeep’s engine. Car batteries have a relatively short life of 3-5 years. The chemical reactions inside the battery will eventually destroy its ability to charge. When you need a new car battery, your Jeep dealer can easily fit it for you.

Bad Alternator

The alternator recharges the battery as you drive. If your alternator is working normally, your battery should always be fully charged. If your alternator is wearing out, it may not produce enough electricity to recharge the battery.

A battery doesn’t have a large storage capacity. When your car is stationary, electricity is drawn from the battery to supply the dash, alarm system, and other devices. If your battery isn’t being recharged, these electrical drains can very quickly kill your battery. Our technicians will test your alternator, and replace it with a new one if it’s worn out.

Corroded Battery Terminals

When a battery gets older, sulfuric acid vapor can escape from the casing. The vapor can mix with moisture in the air and form an acidic salt. This salt collects around the terminals and starts to corrode them. The corrosion will eventually eat through the terminals, and the battery will fail. This corrosion can also spread to the battery cables.

You can check for corrosion by popping the hood and examining your battery. A gray or white salt-like substance on the terminals means your battery is already corroding. It’s possible to temporarily clean the terminals, but the corrosion will come back again. We advise visiting our service department and our technicians will fit a new battery for you.

Old Battery

The average lifespan of a battery is 3-5 years. Extremes of heat and cold, driving conditions, and driving habits can all reduce this lifespan. We advise that you have your battery checked at least every three years. We will test your battery to ensure that it’s still capable of maintaining its charge and its in good working condition

As your battery gets older it starts to lose its ability to recharge. The chemical reactions that convert chemical energy into electrical energy start to degrade the battery. These reactions will eventually cause your battery to fail.

Driving Too Short a Distance

If you often drive short distances, this can easily kill your battery. Your battery uses a large electrical charge to start your car. Maintaining the car’s electrical system will also deplete a weak battery. The alternator will recharge your battery, but it may not be able to charge it enough in a short time. Short-distance driving can easily run down even a new battery.

A dead battery can very easily leave you stranded. To prevent this from happening, call our service department today at Adams Jeep of Maryland.
