Heading out on a bike and hitting the trails is a great way to keep fit and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you’re zooming down an exhilarating mountain bike path or enjoying a leisurely peddle along a wide, green bike route, these biking trails near Aberdeen, MD have something for everything.

1. Susquehanna State Park Trails

Susquehanna State Park, with its thick tree cover and rocky terrain, is a very popular spot for cyclists of all stripes, but especially for mountain bikers who will love the large network of off-road trails. The park is located alongside the river from which it gets its name, the park is, in addition, an excellent fishing spot, where you or your family can relax away from the trails.

The best trial to start with is the Land of Promise Trail that provides a good overview of the park. It’s quite challenging in places, however, and therefore might not be the best for beginners. Beginning at the parking lot by Archer House, the trail is marked by a white blaze that’s hard to miss – you won’t get lost! As you travel up hills and through meadows, you’ll come across branches to other trails, such as the excellent Rock Run Trail, that are also well worth a try.

2. Gunpowder Falls State Park Trails

Another great state park to visit for trails is Gunpowder Falls, which is about 35 minutes drive to the southwest of Aberdeen. Established to protect the Gunpowder River and waterfalls, the park is now one of the largest in the state, and includes miles of forested trails. One of the features most of interest to cyclists is the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, a multi-use trail that follows the route of the old North Central Railway and runs through the heart of the park.

It’s the perfect trail for those who’d rather not brave the park’s off-road trails, as it is almost completely flat underfoot for its entire 20-mile length. For those who’d prefer to head for the hills, try the Quarry Mirror Loop, which slowly gets more challenging as it follows its picturesque route, making it suitable for all levels.

3. Elk Neck State Park Trails

On the other side of the Chesapeake Bay, Elk Neck State Park is a beautiful promontory jutting out into the water between the bay and the Elk River and encompasses a diverse and varied landscape of wetlands, forests and high, clay, cliffs.

There are a few excellent, mostly off-road trails here, including the White Banks Trail, a technical single-track route with many narrow switchbacks and a few challenging sections. Be aware that the clean-up from the 2019 tornado may still be ongoing, and as such many of the trails could be affected.

If, after reading this list, you’ve got the biking bug, then you’ll need a world-class automobile to get you there. So why wait? Visit us at Adams Jeep of Maryland today, and we’d be delighted to help you find your dream car.
