Located less than 30 miles northeast of downtown Baltimore, the city of Aberdeen, MD has a population of around 15,000 and is an excellent place to begin exploring the large urban areas of the northeastern United States. If you like day trips and are looking for places to visit with your friends or family, check out these three destinations, which can be reached in a couple of hours by car from Aberdeen.

1. Annapolis, MD

The capital city of Maryland is a charming place that can be reached in just about an hour by car from downtown Aberdeen, following routes I-97 N and I-95 N. With a population of just under 40,000, Annapolis is known for its history, having served as the seat of the Congress of the Confederation and the capital of the United States between 1783 and 1784. If you are looking for a quiet urban destination, Annapolis is the place to be.

Once you make your way to Annapolis and find a parking spot in the city center, you can reach most of the city’s tourist spots on foot. Go for a walk in the charming Colonial Annapolis Historic District, stop by one of its charming cafés and check out the Maryland State House. After you are done exploring the city’s main attractions, head to the Annapolis City Dock and enjoy the sunset along the shores of the Annapolis Harbor.

2. Harrisburg, PA

After playing a crucial role during the American Civil War, serving as a training base for the Union Army, the city of Harrisburg began gaining importance as a trade center and a vital rail link for the northeastern United States. Nowadays, the city has a population of around 50,000 and is a popular day-trip destination for visitors coming from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other cities in the northeastern United States.

Getting to downtown Harrisburg from the city of Aberdeen takes a little under two hours by car, following route I-83 S. Once you find a parking spot in the city center, you can walk to most of its touristic attractions, including the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Capitol Park, the Walnut Street Bridge, the Riverfront Park and the City Island in the Susquehanna River. Another spot you cannot miss is the National Civil War Museum in Reservoir Park.

3. Washington, D.C.

The capital city of the United States is another excellent day trip destination for visitors from Aberdeen. In just about an hour and a half by car, you can reach some of the most famous landmarks not only in the country but in the entire world. Park your car somewhere close to Union Station and walk along the National Mall, checking out the United States Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the White House.
